Krillion hints strategy: the 3-layer ladder, worked today
Hints are not spoilers — they are a thinking order. This guide works the 3-layer ladder on real prompt shapes so the 25-second clock stops feeling unfair. Independent. Fan-made.
Krillion how to play is a short daily session in the browser. Krillion how to play does not start with an install, a lobby, or a code list. Open the official site, read the prompt, and name one thing before 25 seconds run out. Do that seven times. The same seven prompts are served to everyone that day.
If you have never opened it, ignore fan tier charts. Krillion how to play is fully described by three published lines: seven prompts, 25 seconds, rarer answers run farther. Anything past that, including a numeric ladder, is not something this page will pretend to know.
Why hints exist on this wiki
The dive checks one thing: did your answer fit the prompt, and how rare was that fit. Nothing on the official site is hidden — the rules guide restates what is published. What is genuinely hard is thinking of something rare in 25 seconds. That is a thinking-order problem, and a thinking order can be practiced. That is what the hints are for.
The hints page is spoiler-free by default. The three layers below work on any prompt — daily, Unlimited, or a pack. If you want today's board with picks instead of method, the answers page is the right door.
Layer 1 — name the category first
Every prompt belongs to a family: a record, an animal, a place, a shipwreck, a film. Say the category to yourself before hunting an answer. Half of all blanks are category confusion — the brain answered a different question than the one on screen.
Worked example: a prompt about the deepest scuba dive is a records prompt. Your brain offers "a diver". That is not an answer to a records prompt — a record is a number attached to a name. Reading for the category, not the answer, is the single highest-value habit on this list.
Layer 2 — say the obvious answer, then ban it
Whatever came to you in two seconds came to a million other players in two seconds. The dive rewards obscurity, so the obvious answer is not a candidate — it is a marker. Say it, ban it, and move one layer down.
Worked example: the prompt says whale, you think "whale". Banned. The prompt says shipwreck, you think "the Titanic". Banned. The ban is not wasted time; it is the cheapest filter you own.
Layer 3 — specificize: add a name, number, or place
Specificity is rarity. "Whale" becomes Cuvier's beaked whale. "The Titanic" becomes the USS Indianapolis. A number, a proper name, or a place turns a category answer into a rare one — facts beat vibes, and dates beat adjectives.
This layer is also the safest one to apply under pressure: you are not inventing, you are narrowing. If you know one true specific about your category, you already have a candidate that scores deeper than the banned obvious answer.
The ladder against the 25-second clock
- Seconds 0–5: read the prompt for its category, not its answer.
- Seconds 5–10: say the obvious answer and ban it.
- Seconds 10–20: specificize — attach a name, number, or place to your narrowed idea.
- Seconds 20–25: commit. A blank scores zero; a common answer still scores.
The order matters more than the speed. Players who skip layer 1 and 2 jump straight to their most familiar association and spend the rest of the round trying to make it fit. Players who follow the ladder usually have a committed answer before the clock turns red.
Three mistakes that waste hints
First, treating hints as answers: the ladder teaches you how to think, and the picks on the answers page are today's material — mixing them up trains nothing. Second, banning without replacing: the ban is step one of a move, not a move by itself. Third, saving the ladder for the hard prompt only: run it on every prompt until it is automatic, because the dive is seven rounds and habits are what survive pressure.
Where to practice the ladder
The practice dive on the official site is the safest gym — practice answers can be stored to tune scoring, unlike daily answers, which are dropped after the check. The archive resurfaces aired dailies, Unlimited runs classic dives back to back, and the packs (geography, sports, at the movies) give you themed material for the category pages. Ten minutes of practice with the ladder outperforms an hour of reading about it.
